About typing speed
Words per minute (WPM) is calculated by counting every five typed characters as one "word." Average adult typing speeds run between 35 and 45 WPM. Trained touch typists hit 60 to 80 WPM. Professional transcriptionists reach 100 to 150 WPM.
Tip: accuracy first
A 100 WPM burst with 80% accuracy is slower in practice than 70 WPM at 99% accuracy, because corrections cost time. Read our guide to improving typing speed.
